I was hesitant to buy it at first because I seen that some people had opened it up and it had HGST drive in it, so as soon as I got it I opened it up.
Western digital acquired HGST a while back and was utilizing their stockpiles to fill Western digital orders. As of my order date when I received it it had a authentic Western digital drive in it.
They claim it’s a performance drive with a metal cap to dissipate heat however upon taking it apart there is only a half inch by half inch piece of aluminum foil making contact between the upper metal plate and the hard drive. It would have zero effect. I ended up putting thermal pads in between the hard drive and the upper metal plate to help transfer heat.
Regardless of that I have over a hundred games on it for the PlayStation and it can run any AAA title without issue.
At the price point and storage capacity I would definitely buy it again but if I was designing it there might be a couple things I would tweak.

Definitely, a good buy, when I had a smaller hard drive, it was very good to have, with no issues at all, Western Digital outdid them selfs again, I have a more powerful computer now, but it’s good to have if you need to store recorded footage from games you play, or store files that you need to keep.

I accidentally bought this thinking it was another one of their full-size drives in a similar looking, but considerably larger enclosure. Oops. I figured, might as well make the best of it, 5TB of storage is 5TB of storage (well… let’s get real… it’s that marketing «TB,» not what your computer’s file system calls a TB, so it’s more like 4 TB and some change of storage). I digress.
In using it I was pleasantly surprised by the solid transfer speed, staying around 100 MB per second transferring large files (which is better than I have had from any drive this small and this slow-spinning previously) — often drives like this will transfer at a solid speed ’til they run out of cache, then slow down, but this one holds the speed well ’til the whole job is done.
I was also very impressed with its cool operation. As mentioned I thought it was one of the bigger ones in a similar enclosure, because I already have one of those, and even with its small fan active it runs 10-15C hotter than this smaller drive. Granted, it transfers more quickly as it is a full size 7200 RPM drive, but for the sake of longevity keeping temps below 50C is a great mark in this smaller drive’s favor.
Having got one, I’m now keen to get a few more. They take up so little space and offer a solid amount of storage for the price. I recommend it.

I’ve got 4 1/2 TB of game stored on this and have not had any troubles. The speed is fine. I have a recommend this for gamers on a budget.

Perfect solution for my media collection, though it would not allow computer to reboot if attached at startup. A bit of research revealed that drives over 2TB formatted as shipped in EXT32 is incompatible with many computer BIOS. After months of working around it, I backed up the content and reformatted NTFS, and now it’s just fine.

1-2-2023 — Received unit today. I’ve attached this drive to a SABRENT 10 Port USB 3.0 Hub, (purchased here from Amazon), in order to connect this drive to our DISH Network Hopper3 DVR. The purpose is to transfer a BOAT LOAD of movies from the internal DVR Drive to the WD_Black 5TB P10 USB 3.0 Drive.
Thankfully, the USB Port on the back of the Hopper3 DVR is USB 3.0. So, in connecting that port to the SABRENT 10 Port Powered USB Hub, first, then connecting the External Drive to the 10 Port Hub; I’m actually moving movies right now from the Hopper3 DVR Drive to the WD_Black 5TB P10 Drive.
The Hopper3 DVR had NO trouble identifying the External Drive, formatting it with the internal Hopper3 DVR software, and recognizing the FULL space of the External Drive.
I HIGHLY recommend this External Drive to ANYONE whom wishes to perform the same setup with their DISH Network Hopper3 DVR. Western Digital drives have NEVER failed me in the past, so I expect this drive to last quite awhile, as I’m NOT doing intensive gaming, which this drive is uniquely rated for.

Reinstalling the USB ports from device manager helped solve this thing shutting off when not in use and having to get up and plug it back in. Now it just goes into standby I guess, the light shuts off but I can still bring it up without having to physically reconnect it.
