I accidentally bought this thinking it was another one of their full-size drives in a similar looking, but considerably larger enclosure. Oops. I figured, might as well make the best of it, 5TB of storage is 5TB of storage (well… let’s get real… it’s that marketing «TB,» not what your computer’s file system calls a TB, so it’s more like 4 TB and some change of storage). I digress.
In using it I was pleasantly surprised by the solid transfer speed, staying around 100 MB per second transferring large files (which is better than I have had from any drive this small and this slow-spinning previously) — often drives like this will transfer at a solid speed ’til they run out of cache, then slow down, but this one holds the speed well ’til the whole job is done.
I was also very impressed with its cool operation. As mentioned I thought it was one of the bigger ones in a similar enclosure, because I already have one of those, and even with its small fan active it runs 10-15C hotter than this smaller drive. Granted, it transfers more quickly as it is a full size 7200 RPM drive, but for the sake of longevity keeping temps below 50C is a great mark in this smaller drive’s favor.
Having got one, I’m now keen to get a few more. They take up so little space and offer a solid amount of storage for the price. I recommend it.

I have been using this drive for all my project backups for ARW files, 4K Raw and more. It’s a slower drive but it does its job incredibly well for the price. It’s sleek, feels and is very robust, and matches the rest of my film equipment (If that is of importance to any creatives out there.) It’s an underrated drive for creative work by all means, especially if you’re on a budget and need this kind of storage.

I bought this drive to store PS4 games for my PS5 and to add any over flow PS5 games. You CAN store PS5 games on this drive. It has 4.6 TB of the advertised 5TB storage. I’m not even close to filling that thing and it should last the life of my PS5. I probably have it 1/3 filled after putting all my PS4 games on it. I believe I can play PS4 games directly from this drive, but I would have to transfer the PS5 games back to the PS5 in order to play those. Everything at this point has worked as advertised and I’m happy with this purchase.

1-2-2023 — Received unit today. I’ve attached this drive to a SABRENT 10 Port USB 3.0 Hub, (purchased here from Amazon), in order to connect this drive to our DISH Network Hopper3 DVR. The purpose is to transfer a BOAT LOAD of movies from the internal DVR Drive to the WD_Black 5TB P10 USB 3.0 Drive.
Thankfully, the USB Port on the back of the Hopper3 DVR is USB 3.0. So, in connecting that port to the SABRENT 10 Port Powered USB Hub, first, then connecting the External Drive to the 10 Port Hub; I’m actually moving movies right now from the Hopper3 DVR Drive to the WD_Black 5TB P10 Drive.
The Hopper3 DVR had NO trouble identifying the External Drive, formatting it with the internal Hopper3 DVR software, and recognizing the FULL space of the External Drive.
I HIGHLY recommend this External Drive to ANYONE whom wishes to perform the same setup with their DISH Network Hopper3 DVR. Western Digital drives have NEVER failed me in the past, so I expect this drive to last quite awhile, as I’m NOT doing intensive gaming, which this drive is uniquely rated for.

The speeds are what they promised, the space is what they promised but I found that it is quite rugged too. I dropped it twice from about 2ft while setting up my laptop stand and it seems to have held up well. Of course the needle was parked since I wasn’t actively using it. This is my send >4TB HDD and I’m happy with it. Good job there WD!

The sleek black enclosure with the white letters makes this enclosure look rugged and near military style. The drive isn’t rugged and shock proof, just appears that way. Small in size and light weight, this drive is portable. Their is not much bulk to the enclosure and the enclosure is not much larger than a 2.5inch HD. The drive is very quiet and is passively cooled, no loud fans spinning. There is a white LED on one end of the drive that indicates power and data transfer to the drive. The LED does fade in and out depending on what the drive is doing but will remain lit while powered. It is not adjustable in any way and does not have a way to disable. Just a personal preference, but I do like the LED and the overall look of the drive.
They do include a USB cable that is less than 1 foot in length. I’m guessing to keep the data transfer speeds from being affected by longer cables. I have not replaced with a longer cable but it is an option. Not sure if it will affect performance.
NO EXTRA POWER NEEDED! USB power is all that is needed. Only one cable needed with this drive. This means less wires to manage and less risk for dust or debris to get into the drive or ports.
Set up was easy for the PS4, all I had to do was format through the settings after I connected the drive to the console.
I use this external drive on my PS4 connected to the USB. My console still has the original HD internally, but I use this as my Extended Drive and where all of my games are installed. While I haven’t done any testing or timing, the load times appear to be nearly the same as the OEM hard drive that was included with the system.
The 5TB storage capacity has allowed me to install every PS4 game I own on disc and has allowed me for the first time to purchase digital copies of games. No more need to delete installed games and wait countless hours for them to re-install!!
If you are wanting a mechanical HD for your gaming needs, I highly recommend this drive! I’ve purchased 2 for my home and really love them!
