I bought the 2TB Samsung 980PRO SSD for my PS5. The storage is actually a full 2TB (2.01TB), which is nice, but this drive was clearly not designed for PS5 in mind. The advertised speed is 7,000mb but when I formatted it in my PS5 it shows speed of 5,700mb. Online research has a few explanations such as a need to update it in a PC first, that it was designed prior to the PS5 release, that the speed rating is more accurate for the smaller sized version of the SSD, or that this is the advertised ‘peak’ speed and not actual running speed but that is a big difference between advertised and actual performance. However, it meets the minimum speed of 5,500mb that Sony requires for the PS5 so this will work fine — just don’t expect light-warping speeds. I have only installed it for a couple days and transferred a PS5 title to it which works fine. This SSD will compare in performance to the factory installed SSD from Sony but it will not exceed your expectations in a PS5. I would still recommend it if you are looking for bulk storage at a decent price as it does function fine. Just be aware that it will not operate the same in a console as it will in a PC.

I recently upgraded my gaming PC with the SAMSUNG 980 PRO SSD 2TB PCIe NVMe Gen 4 Gaming M.2 Internal Solid State Drive, and I must say that it has significantly improved my gaming experience.

The speed and performance of this SSD are outstanding. The PCIe NVMe Gen 4 interface provides lightning-fast read and write speeds, allowing for quick boot times, speedy game loading, and seamless multitasking. The 2TB capacity is also more than enough to store all of my games and files, without having to worry about running out of space.

The design of the 980 PRO is also impressive. The M.2 form factor is sleek and compact, allowing for easy installation and integration into my PC build. The drive also features a heat spreader that helps to dissipate heat, ensuring that the SSD operates at optimal temperatures even during intensive gaming sessions.

Another great feature of the 980 PRO is its durability. The drive is built to last, with a 1.5 million hour MTBF (mean time between failures) rating and a five-year limited warranty. This provides peace of mind knowing that my investment is protected and will continue to perform at a high level for years to come.

Overall, I highly recommend the SAMSUNG 980 PRO SSD 2TB PCIe NVMe Gen 4 Gaming M.2 Internal Solid State Drive to anyone looking for a high-performance and reliable SSD for their gaming or professional needs. It’s a top-of-the-line product that provides lightning-fast speeds, ample storage capacity, and exceptional durability.

I set that up with a Gigabyte x570 Aorus Elite Wifi and AMD Ryzen 5 3600 CPU alongside with Crucial Balistix 3600 16-18-18-38 RAM. My Windows 10 PC boots to desktop within 10 seconds from the moment I press the power button. I truly enjoy this. I just have a very big layback on price here. I know, new technology, new interface and stuff, but to me, it never will justify this huge price.

So, am I satisfied? Yes, af course. I hope so for 300$ CAD!

Samsung lost a star because of 2 things. First, I was about to peel off the sticker so I could put a heatsink on top of the card until I did some research to find out that the sticker itself was a way to reduce a bit of heat from the drive. THIS detail should have been in the instructions booklet of Samsung. If you want to install a heatsink, simply intall it over the sticker WITHOUT peeling it. Other point, at THAT price, I would have expected a small set of screws to put on the board because if I want to have 2 NVMe drives on my bpard, I cannot anymore because I used the second screw onboard for this drive. I also did not see any options for an added heatsink because I have read on many reviews that this drive does generate a bit more heat than its competitors. The second thing that made it loose a star is the availablility of the Magician software. I had to wait 2 days for the software to be available on Samsung’s own website. AND the app itself is not very clear on what to do. I personally find it hard for new commers like me in the NVMe world to know what to do with what is being shown. So, I am not impressed by the software side either.

Asside from these, I’m happy with my purchase but the 300$ price is still triggering a little something inside and that’s the 1Tb version, the 2Tb and 4Tb are just for rich people and my 1Tb was a luxury buy because there were many other options to choose from, XPG, Sabrent, WD all had some good sides too and all have PCIe Gen 4 supported NVMe drives at cheaper prices, although XPG is the cheapest out there. I am satisfied with my purchase.

If you have the extra money after spending for a decent graphics card, CPU, RAM and Motherboard, then YES, I recommend this drive, or else, cheaper drives or even Gen 3 drives are more than enough and worth it to spare a few hundred dollars.

Speeds are exaggerated, my motherboard supports gen 4 speeds but after testing I was only getting 3500 read/write speeds. I’d recommend just getting the cheaper 970plus since the speeds are the exact same.

This is a great product. It offers huge performance maps over staccato sata ssds. One caveat: make sure you download the Samsung magician software to monitor your drives and keep them up-to-date. There was a firmware issue that was corrupting earlier 980 pro 2tb m.2 drives and placing them into a read-only mode. The Samsung magician will help you make sure you have the latest firmware, which has resolved that issue.

Other than that, this m.2 is amazing. And now that prices have come down, this drive’s cost-to-performance value is top of the line. Yes, there are other drives out there that compete, and they compete well, but samsung has been good to me over the years, and this is another product I can faithfully stand by.

I think Samsung has the best quality products… so I went with the best for my PS5. I snagged it while it was on sale for 60 dollars cheaper than retail and managed to get a heatsink also at the side tax in, all for cheaper than just the retail of the SSD!! It’s worth the price. 1TB is enough for me now.. I’m sure once the PS5 sells more and more gamers get the console in their hands that the SSD’s will come down and you will manage to get a 2TB or 4TB for a decent price. It was a breeze to install!! Just be sure not to forget to buy a heatsink as Sony says it is required for these as it helps it stay cool and reduce heat no only on the SSD but the console itself. I installed this myself but if you aren’t confident in doing it then see if someone more tech savvy can do it for you. Don’t risk it. All and all I am really happy with my purchase and can finally have that extra space needed to install my other PS5 games.

I had one of these in my gaming laptop and it was great. For my more stout gaming rig I went with the rocket q4 because they had slightly better read/write speeds.. and well.. regretted my purchase within 6 or so months. The benchmark speeds from day 1 were awful and no amount of tweaking with their software could fix it. The biggest issue is for whatever reason the MBR kept getting corrupt (sabrent kept saying it was a software problem and not a hardware problem and refused to warranty it) and locked the computer up. That meant every couple weeks or so I needed to reformat the drive, reinstall windows completely from a boot drive (because windows couldn’t fix the problem on it’s own). Which meant i lost all my data as well (mostly games that I had to re-download, and partly because i was lazy and didn’t connect my sata backup up, but still frustrating either way). I decided to go with this drive again for the rig and it was night and day different. Benchmarks were way better, faster boot, and haven’t had to reinstall windows again! Knew I should have went with this to begin with.

As a consumer of the Samsung 980 Pro NVMe SSD, I have experienced both positive and negative aspects of this product. Firstly, I recorded impressive read and write speeds of 2244 MB/s and 2180 MB/s respectively using an external ACASIS 40Gbps NVMe Enclosure. However, I noticed that the temperatures of the drive can get up to 39-40 degrees Celsius, which has been a concern for some users.

On the other hand, I have come across many reports of failures with the Samsung 990 drive and other internal/external drives, both pre-assembled and those that require self-assembly. This has led some users to prefer slow but dependable HDDs instead. In my own experience, I use a 1TB external drive for fast read and write speed with 500gb of Photoshop data, and I have not encountered any issues so far.

I originally had a WD Black 850X for my PS5, but it was not compatible, so I switched to the Samsung 980 Pro, and I am happy to say it has been a great improvement, with no more headaches or unexpected shut-offs. I was able to transfer and download all my games with ease. However, some users may have compatibility issues depending on the company the SSD is from.

I added this M.2 drive to my current PC and noticed a significant improvement in game loading after moving my HDD Steam library to this drive. I can’t wait to see how it performs in a Gen 4 slot. The drive is easy to install, but be aware that you may need to buy M.2 SSD screws, and it is recommended to download Samsung Magician for firmware updates to ensure maximum lifespan.

Cloning can be a bit of a challenge, especially if you have a computer with an NVMe SSD and no other NVMe sockets. You will need to use an external device to mount the new NVMe SSD and directly copy the existing operating system and other content. Samsung provides an easy way to do this using the Samsung clone utility, but it may be faster to use a slower two-step process with a USB HDD.

There was some confusion regarding the Samsung device driver for Windows, as some statements emphasized the need to install the proprietary driver, while others stated it was optional for newer versions of Windows. In my case, I was never able to install the Samsung driver on my Windows 10 laptop, but the system still seemed to perform well.

Thermal management was a concern, but the Samsung Magician app showed that the SSD was running at good temperatures, even under load. The drive fit perfectly with the thin, somewhat sticky elastomeric material that was mounted between the old SSD and an aluminum heat spreading cover.

Unfortunately, one user had a drive fail within a year of purchase and reported poor customer service from Samsung. After waiting for almost two weeks for a replacement drive, the user requested a refund and switched to a competitor with better customer service.

In conclusion, the Samsung 980 Pro NVMe SSD has provided great performance for some users, but there have also been reports of compatibility issues and failures, as well as poor customer service. Before making a purchase, it is important to weigh the pros and cons and consider the individual’s specific needs and experiences.
